About the role
As the Head of Case Presentation and Appeals at the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), you will be responsible for ensuring the quality of legal services within the Case Presentation and Preparation department (CPP) within the Professional Regulation Directorate.
This pivotal senior management role encompasses leading operational oversight of lawyers with the responsibility of, amongst other things
Advising on regulatory casework at the latter stages of our fitness to practise case work process;
Presenting at interim and substantive hearings.
Providing appeals advice
Preparing applications to the High Court and delivery of associated High Court appearances.
You will collaborate with the Head of Case Management within this department to lead CPP in alignment with the NMC's values and behaviours, manage significant budgets and ensure processes are efficient and fit for purpose.
You will have a keen interest in continuous improvement and take learning from all our hearings and casework and build them in to our ways of working.
You will be a key member of our legal community, working collaboratively with other legal leaders to ensure lawyers and the legal community across Professional Regulation and the NMC are aligned to our organisational purpose and that we continue to work towards building a thriving legal community.
Key Accountabilities:
Develop and ensure compliance with robust quality and risk management arrangements for legal services.
Design comprehensive and high-quality processes for legal service provision in CPP.
Oversee and provide legal advice in our most complex cases and appeal work.
Lead recruitment, induction, training, and development of lawyers in CPP, managing a team of senior lawyers.
Ensure high-quality external legal resources are obtained when necessary for CPP.
Collaborate with senior management in FtP to achieve corporate and directorate key performance indicators.
Collaborate with General Counsel, corporate legal services, and other NMC policy and legal teams for knowledge management, legal risk management, professional development, and corporate litigation.
Have oversight of departmental budgetsLead and develop departmental culture in line with the NMC values and legal standards of professionalism.
About You
Qualified as a solicitor or barrister with significant practicing experience. Significant experience in regulatory law, preferably healthcare and fitness to practice or similar casework.
Proven management and leadership experience at a senior level, including managing and supervising lawyers ensuring a high level of legal service. Budget management experience.
Experience in managing large operational processes and systems to challenging timescales. Ability to develop and implement best practices in case presentation before practice committees and the courts.
Ability to identify, develop, and promote innovative approaches to service delivery.
